History

1936-1941 - The first five years of the genesis of this church was established by men who were determined and dedicated to the cause of Christian men who wanted the citizens of the Lake Como community to know that they were invited to a place where God visibly reigned, thus drawing men, women, and children to lift His name. Had it not been for the Lord and those that He predestined as the founders, including Sharper, Baldwin, Ward, Jordan, Adkins and Brooks, there would not be a Como First Missionary Baptist Church today. Two pastors, Rev. M. C. Watson and Rev. O. B. McKinney, served the flock during that five- year period.

1941-1961 - The next two decades brought much growth to the Como church both in its spiritual and physical structure. For twenty years, through a labor of love and the hand of God, the church stood the test of time. Rev. C. C. Galloway took over the pastorate in 1941 and served over 19 years. In its early years, the church was a wood structure. Gas heaters warmed the sanctuary in the winter. In summer, the windows were raised as congregants prayed for a cool breeze. Occasionally, paper fans were distributed. These were donated by the Ferguson, Pinkston, and Baker funeral homes. The main sanctuary was located at 5237 Kilpatrick Avenue at that time. In 1957, Rev. C. C. Galloway envisioned a new Como First Missionary Baptist Church with a white brick exterior, cement steps, covered porch, window fans, and, at the very top of the church, a lighted cross to direct men our way. The Como church underwent its third remodeling. The entrance service, which culminated that remodeling project, took place on May 26, 1957.

1961-1996 - In late 1960, Pastor Galloway resigned and the church voted in Rev. Herbert Douglas Steptoe. Rev. Steptoe began his pastorate at Como First Missionary Baptist Church in January 1962. That same year, the church began yet another physical transformation between 1962 and 1964. Wood paneled interior walls, new global lights, plush carpet, the installation of a baptismal pool, central heat and air, a kitchen and a pastor's study were added. The first church van was purchased and paved parking lots were added. On May 28, 1975, a meeting was held and a vote taken to purchase property for future expansions. In 1985, the decision to build a new edifice, on the adjacent property at 5228 Goodman Avenue, began to unfold. With the insight and labor of the late Deacon Willie Weathers, plans got underway in 1986. The entrance service for the new edifice took place with a grand march from 5237 Kilpatrick to 5228 Goodman on August 23, 1987. In 1993, the health of Pastor Steptoe began to wane and the active membership declined to approximately 180. A decision was made, by the church, to retire Rev. Steptoe in January 1996. A search was launched for a new pastor and in August 1996, Rev. Kenneth Jones, Jr. was voted in.

1996 - 1997 - Pastor Kenneth Jones, Jr. was formally installed in November 1996 bringing a youthful energy, enthusiasm, insight, and a discerning spirit to a wavering church. In less than two months of his pastorate, the note for the church was burned. During Pastor Jones' first year, additional parking lots were purchased and paved. Former church officers and workers from 1936-1997 were honored in an unprecedented way at Green Oaks Inn. The old sanctuary at 5237 Kilpatrick Avenue was named the H. D. Steptoe Youth Educational Activity Center and dedicated to Pastor Emeritus, Rev. Herbert Douglas Steptoe.

1997-1999 - Extensive renovations were done on the H. D. Steptoe center with the installation of storm windows, classrooms, storage cabinets in the kitchen, a storage room for the facilities and grounds manager, and a choir robe room. The church also purchased banquet chairs and a church van, while REMAINING DEBT FREE.

1999-2000 - There was a face lift to the main sanctuary at 5228 Goodman Avenue. Restrooms, remodeled entry way, restructured balcony, new pews, redesigned choir loft with new choir chairs, custom lighting, new carpet, marble floors in the narthex, and a new pulpit were all part of the face lift. This renovation, a simple but elegant enhancement, gives more comfort, beauty, grace, and dignity to the sanctuary for the saints of CFMBC and our guest. The first phase of our church expansion and enhancement was dedicated on July 8, 2001, while STILL REMAINING DEBT FREE. ALL PRAISES TO GOD!

Through the vision of Pastor Jones, Como First Missionary Baptist Church embarked on its latest building project with ground breaking in late 2006 for the Como 1st Baptist Educational Center which would be attached to the main sanctuary.
